Working out with Coach "Hard Work"

So Wednesday was speed training & weights. The workout was abbreviated since my son's summer camp program has ended. We had a play date with a group of boys and met up at a YMCA centrally located. I'd never been to this Y but I knew they had an indoor and outdoor track. The outdoor track was being used so we opted for speed training indoors. I was only able to run .5 mile; the track was dangerously lopsided and walkers were taking up both lanes. I know there was a sign instructing walkers to stay on the inside lane...but, whatever.

While watching the boys play basketball for an hour or so, my friend and I did lunges, squats and duck walks along the length of the court. We left shortly thereafter and I decided to finish my workout during my son's football practice.

Once practice started, I ran 1.5 miles and sat down to watch football drills. One of the coaches, Coach Brown, always leads their warm up and continues his own work out once drill begins. Still energized, I asked him if I could join him.

And I quickly found out why they nicknamed him Coach "Hard Work".

After a warm up walk around the field, we did 5 STEEP hill repeats. He gave me great advice -- to take short, quick steps and use your arms to drive your legs. I have to say, it made running uphill easier; I wasn't as tired. Since I already ran and did lower body, we did push ups and sit-ups. He pulled out 8 lb weights for biceps and triceps curls and side and front shoulder raises.

All of this sounds normal, right? But let me tell you why he's Coach Hard Work. Each time I paused during reps, he started over at one. So, if I was supposed to do 10 reps and I pause at rep 6, when I start back again, he started counting at 1. I know I was giving him the evil eye, but he didn't care. And I didn't dare talk back or complain because I've seen what he does to the players who do.

After the upper body workout, we did a cool down lap around the field and called it a night.
